Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash was born February 26, 1932, in Kingsland, Arkansas. From humble beginnings, he would go on to become one of the most influential songwriter and performer in the history of American music, popular with both Rock & Roll and Country music fans. During his 50-year career, he sold over 50 million albums, rivaling the fame of Elvis, the King of Rock & Roll.
The son of farmers, Cash started working in the cotton fields at the age of five. Even then, he sang in the fields to help pass the time and endure the hardships. The Cash farm was flooded during a storm, destroying all their assets. This event was immortalized in the song,"Five Feet High and Rising", perhaps the beginning of the Johnny Cash music legend.
During the Great Depression, Cash was inspired to write songs telling the tales of suffering and hardship experienced by his friends. He began playing guitar as a child, and during his high school years, sang on local radio stations. Years later, he recorded an album of gospel songs, titled "My Mothers Hymn Book". Following that release, Johnny Cash music was on the rise, with people of similar backgrounds clamoring for the songs that spoke to them in their own struggles.
